Building community – and a business – through authentic coffee and ideas.

Buunni

New York

Sarina Prabasi is the co-founder of Buunni Coffee in Manhattan’s Inwood neighborhood, which she and her husband Elias opened when they arrived from Ethiopia in 2011 and which has expanded to include three additional locations in Washington Heights.

Serving high quality coffee made from ethically sourced Ethiopian beans, Buunni Coffee also focuses on community building and cultural events like a book club and open mic nights. Their signature coffee beans are available online and in boutique hotels, restaurants, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s giftshop.

When the pandemic forced Buunni to offer limited service and to shut down social events attheir cafes, they created a coffee bean subscription program and added Ethiopian dishes for delivery that are now part of the cafe menu. Accompany Capital’s ongoing support has also helped Sarina and Elias create a 5,000 square-foot coffee roastery they will open in the South Bronx this year.

Sarina has been named by both Fortune and Food & Wine magazines as one of the Most Innovative Women in Food & Drink, honored by the New York Business Journal as a Woman of Influence and received our 2023 Made in New York Award.
