Helping Pema Successfully Earn her Degree

Pema Omu Lama

Queens

Pema Omu Lama came to the United States in 2008 as a student, leaving behind the political and educational instability in her native Nepal. After one year at Southern Arkansas University, she moved to New York. In spite of the challenges of a new country, a new language, and no family support, she re-enrolled at LaGuardia Community College as a full-time student while working part-time as a nanny.

With the help of matched savings from BCNA’s IDA program, she has now earned an Associate Degree in Healthcare Management and plans to continue studying for a Bachelor’s Degree.
